Connect Your TV with Chromecast

It’s been called a digital media player, a network adapter, a tab caster or just simply an HDMI dongle. Chromecast’s identity crisis might reflect the newness and uniqueness of its functionality but one thing is certain: at just $35, it is one of the best deals in digital technology that you are ever going to come across.

Simply put, Chromecast adds Internet capability to your TV, allowing you to make the big screen part of your home network. Once your TV is connected, you can stream content from your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

At this point you’re probably thinking ”Why not go out and buy a smart TV?” but that’s where the bargain price comes into play. A decent sized smart TV costs twenty times what you will pay for Chromecast, so why not have a connected TV while you’re saving for the big upgrade?

Setting up Chromecast couldn’t be easier. You just plug it into an HDMI port on your TV, download the Chromecast app and connect Chromecast to your home network. Chromecast works with Android tablets and smartphones, iPhones, iPads, and notebooks running Chrome for Mac or Chrome for Windows, so any one of these devices can be used for set up.

Once Chromecast is installed on your network, you can start streaming content from a growing number of apps, including Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Vevo, and Google Play TV and Movies. You can also stream music from Pandora, Google Play Music and Songza. Your smartphone, tablet or laptop effectively becomes your remote, allowing you to control exactly what’s happening on the bigger screen.

You can also stream anything from your Chrome browser, which is where tab casting comes in. Just click on the little blue Cast icon at the top right of your browser window and anything you are watching or listening to on your desktop or laptop – photos, movies, music, video or your favorite web site – will be mirrored on your TV screen.

I can hear Roku and Apple TV owners saying “Hey, wait a minute. Can’t my device do everything that Chromecast can do and a whole lot more?” And it’s true: the Roku 3 works with over 1,000 apps and has a number of additional features like cross-platform search, while Apple TV lets you access all your content on your TV and works particularly well as part of a wider Apple ecosystem. But both systems cost almost three times as much as Chromecast, which already has some of the mostly widely used movie and TV apps and is adding more all the time.

As we add more and more devices to our connected worlds, it seems crazy that the one entertainment system that dominates most living rooms is left out in the cold. Google Chromecast changes all that, making sure that you can switch to the big screen whenever you want to. An Internet-connected TV for just $35!
