Otra vez llega esa época del año y, a pesar de la popularidad de los teléfonos inteligentes y las tabletas, mucha gente estará aprovechando la oportunidad para reemplazar su avejentada laptop. Aunque las tabletas están muy bien para revisar el correo electrónico, ver películas y navegar la Web, las laptops y computadoras de escritorio siguen siendo los caballos de batalla en la mayor parte de las casas y las oficinas.

Sin embargo, seleccionar una nueva notebook puede resultar un asunto complicado, ya que van desde pequeñas computadoras portátiles que cuestan menos de $300 y que sirven para iniciarse en ellas, hasta las MacBook Pros que pueden llegar a costar hasta $2,800. Entre esas dos categorías, hay una gran variedad de opciones que pueden confundir hasta al comprador más conocedor.

El primer paso consiste en preguntarte a ti mismo qué es lo que harás con la laptop. Si solamente quieres mantenerte al corriente de tu correo electrónico, organizar tu música, navegar en Internet, lo apropiado sería algo como una Chromebook. Si eres un jugador empedernido o si tu trabajo tiene que ver con muchos dibujos y gráficos, entonces necesitarás un modelo algo más poderoso.

De igual forma, si la laptop va a sustituir a una antigua máquina de escritorio, entonces, un modelo más compacto con una pantalla de buen tamaño, podría ser la respuesta adecuada. Pero, si siempre andas cargando tu laptop y atravesando seguridad en los aeropuertos, una laptop ligera está obligada.

El truco está en no pagar demasiado por características que nunca usarás, pero también tendrás que estar seguro de que te sentirás contento con lo que has comprado y que tu laptop te durará por lo menos 3 o 4 años. Una vez que decidas lo que vas a hacer con tu laptop, aquí te presentamos algunas cosas que debes buscar:

Procesador

El procesador es lo más importante de tu laptop ya que él determina el funcionamiento íntegro, o sea, su rapidez de respuesta, cuántas aplicaciones pueden correrse simultáneamente, etc. Las notebooks muy pequeñas decepcionan a veces porque sus procesadores no son muy poderosos. Los procesadores Intel de tercera generación y los dual-core o quad-core de AMD son excelentes opciones. (Los procesadores dual-core o quad-core de AMD son, básicamente, múltiples procesadores en lugar de solamente uno; doble número de procesadores da como resultado un funcionamiento dos veces más eficiente.)

Memoria

Toda computadora viene con cierta cantidad de “memoria de acceso aleatorio” (o  RAM, siglas en inglés para “Random Access Memory). A mayor memoria, el funcionamiento de la laptop será mejor. Como regla general, necesitarás por lo menos 4GB de memoria si estás utilizando Windows 8, el nuevo sistema operativo de Microsoft que estará pre-instalado en la mayoría de las nuevas computadoras personales. Si estás pensando conservar tu laptop durante mucho tiempo, fíjate si posteriormente podrás mejorar la memoria.

Disco Duro

Ésta es el área de almacenaje de la computadora y, de nueva vez, la cantidad que requieres dependerá del número y tamaño de los archivos que guardarás. Si tienes intenciones de manejar grandes cantidades de videos y otros archivos de multimedia, necesitarás por lo menos 500GB. Sin embargo, no sobrestimes tus necesidades porque ello te costará tanto en dinero como en peso.

(Mucha gente está confundida todavía en lo que concierne a la diferencia entre memoria y almacenaje. Imagina que tu computadora es una oficina. Almacenaje es la cantidad de espacio que hay en los archiveros que están colocados contra las paredes. La memoria es el espacio que tienes en tu escritorio. Sacas los documentos que están en los archiveros y los llevas a tu escritorio para trabajar en ellos; cuando terminas, los vuelves a meter en los archiveros. Las computadoras funcionan de la misma forma. La memoria es el espacio que necesitas para abrir y guardar los documentos en los que estás trabajando actualmente.)

Lector de DVDs y CDs

Es bueno tener un lector de DVDs y CDs integrado, pero no es esencial. Si piensas reproducir un montón de DVDs o quemar CDs, deberás incluirlo en tu lista. De lo contrario, puedes optar por una máquina más ligera  y compacta y comprar un disco externo barato cuando lo necesites.

Monitor

Asegúrate de que te vas a sentir cómodo con el tamaño de la pantalla. Los tamaños van desde 7″ hasta 22″ (medidas diagonalmente, como las televisiones). Si vas a pasar todo el día frente a la pantalla, algo entre 13″ y 17″ será adecuado generalmente. Los arriesgados querrán las más grandes, pero recuerda que en las laptops lo más grande no significa que sean mejores. Hay que tomar en cuenta muchos otros factores como la brillantez, el color y la claridad. Si puedes, revisa la pantalla a la luz del día o bajo una luz tan brillante como sea posible.

Teclado

De igual modo, debes sentirte cómodo con el teclado. Mientras más pequeña es la máquina, más amontonadas estarán las teclas. Aún si lo que quieres es comprar en línea, revisa el teclado en alguna tienda o trata de encontrar un modelo de tamaño similar antes de tomar la decisión.

Batería

Si viajas mucho o generalmente usas tu computadora en el camino, la vida de la batería es muy importante. La mayor parte de las laptops de mediano tamaño tienen ahora una vida de batería de alrededor de 5 o 6 horas, por lo que no te conformes con menos. De manera similar, lo que hagas con tu laptop determinará qué tan rápidamente se acabe la batería. Si te gusta ver películas, decídete por una opción que dure más. Las baterías de repuesto o los paquetes de baterías no son baratos, pero pueden valer el dinero que gastes en ellos.

Trabajando en red

Actualmente, todas las laptops incluyen una conexión Ethernet para tener un acceso de gran velocidad a Internet y tarjetas integradas para trabajar en redes inalámbricas, de modo que puedas tener acceso inalámbrico a los hotspots públicos así como a tu red casera. Es conveniente buscar otras conexiones que incluyan un puerto VGA para un monitor externo, contactos para diadema telefónica y para micrófono y, por lo menos, dos puertos USB para conectar otros artículos como cámaras digitales, reproductores MP3, memorias externas, etc. Para uso en la casa, también podrías querer conexiones HDMI o alguna otra conexión A/V para conectar tu laptop directamente a tu televisión.

A pesar de la complejidad de las opciones que están disponibles, la buena noticia es que las laptops actuales son rápidas, poderosas y no son caras. Mediante algo de conocimiento, no hay razón por la que no puedas encontrar la laptop adecuada.
